Using Windows 7 and the current version of PaperScan Free version, I can only get it to work if I run it from an administrator account or right click and "run as administrator".
I have tried giving full control permissions to the Orpalis and ScanGear folders in Program Files and to the TWAIN folder, but I still get a message that says:
No scanner is selected for scanning.
Select the scanner using SvanGear Tool.
The scanner driver will be quitted.

I do not have this issue when running as administrator.

What is the fix?

Sorry for the delay.
PaperScan does work well without administrator rights, it's even the program's default settings, but maybe your driver requires them and because the two are related, then, you need administrator rights to use PaperScan too.
